Older windows (especially if they’re older than 20 or 25) can really do a disservice to a home (and its energy bill). But getting new windows can also be pricey. If none of the above is in your budget right now, you can still be window-smart with the treatments you already have in our winter and cooler climate: During the day, when your window can get direct sunlight, keep your treatments open so that your room can benefit from the free solar heat, which will warm your room. On cloudy days, close the treatment to insulate the room and keep warm air in. Similarly, at night, don’t lose the warm air to the coolness outside—keep your treatment closed.
