In 2016, for the first time ever, the Pantone® Color Institute is announcing two colors of the year instead of one. This year, Rose Quartz and Serenity will be making their calm and peaceful entrance to the trends of color. If you’re interested in adding these or other new colors to your home, contact a trained consultant at Window Treats serving New Jersey and New York. We’ll be happy to help you determine what works for you.
Who Chooses the Colors of the Year and How?
The Color Marketing Group (CMG) meets twice a year to forecast color in both residential and contract worlds. Before they meet, they must study past trends and forecast future ones. They look at many factors that can influence the trends, including these:
- The Economy—When the economy is strong, popular colors are rich, deep, and vibrant. When it is weak, colors trend toward light and soft or safe
- War—When the country is under attack, color trends to safe, soft, and practically nonexistent, including choices such as taupe, gray, and white
- Current and Predicted Events—When major events are predicted, such as the Presidential election, the Olympics, and, yes, even the Star Wars movie, softer and safe colors are what we are drawn to
With all of those factors to consider, it’s clear that color is not a designer’s whim. It represents trends regarding where we are and where we want to go as a society and how people are feeling or not feeling.
Industries That Use Forecasted Colors
All industries that produce a product for fashion, home furnishings, hospitality, and automotive follow forecasted trends by taking those colors and adapting them to their region and products. For example, in warmer climates, may be lighter, while in cooler climates, they may be a bit darker than the actual forecasted color.
Pantone® Color Institute
At the Pantone Color Institute, you can see the exact match to the forecasted colors. Just follow their numbering system: For Rose Quartz, find Pantone color 13-1520, and for Serenity, find Pantone color 15-3919. For more information and to see the colors in action, click here.
