At Window Treats serving Monmouth Beach, many of our customers ask us about ways they can increase the amount of living space in their home. One natural response is, well—natural: the great outdoors. If you have some outdoor space (whether it’s a full yard, a patio, or even a fifth-floor apartment deck), you can add to your living area by making the best use of it. Read on for some ideas!
Start With a Vision
Design experts suggest that the best way to start creating a living area outside is to treat the space the same way you would an interior room—measure the area, graph it out, and plan for the elements you’ll use. For example, if you’ll use the area for entertaining, consider how much seating the space can hold. If you only have a small area to work with, you’ll need to use the space wisely—but it’s all still doable.
Additional Considerations
Think of how weather might impact your outdoor living space. If it’s blasted by sun, consider a pergola or sturdy umbrellas. If it’s blasted by wind, consider putting up some sort of barrier—a hedge or a wind wall (which could even incorporate living plants). If you’ll be out there at night, you might want a heating source such as a fire pit or patio heater. For hard surfaces, consider an outdoor rug—for beauty, to set the area apart, and for comfort. Think about storage as well—you can find furniture that doubles as storage boxes or cleverly disguised wall hangings that can hold your necessaries. Add some lighting for evening or nighttime safety and ambiance. Walkway lighting (much of which you can find solar-powered), party lights, or even strings of lights could do just the trick.
Help From Hunter Douglas Products
Your new outdoor living space might change they type of indoor window treatments you need—if you’ve added a shade element outside, maybe you only need privacy protection or something with view-through inside. Or perhaps simply draperies will do. Either way, if your situation inside has changed because you changed your situation outside, consider upgrading your current window fashions—be sure to speak with one of our consultants for ideas!
